Tate Modern Photography
I recently provided Tate Modern Photography coverage for the Tate modern exhibition for Mudlarking in London. Nick Stevens from TV show Mudmen, Jason Sandy and Monika Buttling-Smith shared their amazing mudlarking finds with members of the public and gave talks about the incredible history of London revealed by the artefacts. If you’re interested in learning all about the history of these fascinating items I would definitely recommend following them on Instagram.
Mudlarking on The Thames
If you’ve never heard of mudlarking, a mudlark is someone who scavenges in river mud for items of value. What used to be people’s livelihoods in the late 18th and 19th centuries it’s now a popular hobby for history enthusiasts. London was once considered the “Warehouse of the World” as the Thames was the largest port in the world. There are loads of spots to look for treasure, partly due to the fact the River Thames foreshore is 95 miles long!
If you fancy a spot of Mudlarking, there are many great spots in London in which to Mudlark but you will need a licence. There’s ripe sites throughout the city centre at which to try your hand at the centuries old past time. These are some of the best scavenging spots in London.
Tate Modern Bankside
With a long beach in front of the museum and easy access via stairs, this is one of the best locations at which to Mudlark.
The North Bank at St Pauls Cathedral
This is a great spot due to the historical significance of the area. With so much still buried under the city, who knows what you might find at the banks near St Pauls.
The Docklands at Canary Wharf
The Docklands aren’t as built up an area as the city centre and therefore may be a more relaxing area in which to mudlark.
Southbank Photography
The Tate modern building is huge and they’ve got loads of options if you’d like to book out one of their event spaces. This event took place in the Tate Modern London Blavatnik Building. If you require a Tate Modern photographer for your event please do get in touch.
